Just this week, Netflix greenlit a live-action adaptation of the 1985 classic manga City Hunter (シティーハンター). This isn’t the first live-action adaptation of City Hunter but it is the first one to be produced in Japan.
If you’re new to the series, the original City Hunter manga, created by Tsukasa Hojo (北条 司), debuted in 1985. It ran until 1991 for a total of 35 volumes. The story follows Ryo Saba (冴羽 獠) who teams up with his partner’s sister after his demise. The two work together as crime busters for hire in this beloved old-school action comedy.
The manga was met with four total anime adaptations. The first of which first was produced by Sunrise and released in 1987. It lasted until 1988 with a total of 51 episodes. The anime adaptations were widely successful with audiences spanning internationally.
The new Netflix adaptation is set to release in 2024, so we’ve got a fair bit of waiting to do before we can check it out. Here’s what we know so far. The live-action City Hunter will be directed by Yuichi Sato (佐藤祐市) and stars Ryohei Suzuki (鈴木 亮平) as our main protagonist Ryo Saba.
You’ve got plenty of time to catch up on the series before the big debut. If you want to watch the anime, you can check it out over at Crunchyroll and Retro Crush. You can also pick up the manga at Amazon if you’d like to dig into the source material.
